“How did I become an accused?” Shilasti Rahman, who was arrested for the murder of Member of Parliament of Jhenaidah-4 Constituency Anwarul Azim Anar, raised this question in tears in the courtroom. At the end of the hearing, all three accused were granted remand for eight days by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroze Tithi.
At the beginning of the hearing, a lawyer went to Shilasti Rahman to get his signature on the bail petition. At that moment, Selasta burst into tears and asked, “Should I sign any bail petition? How did I become an accused? I was just at that house. Apart from that, I know nothing.”

On Friday, the accused were brought before the court, and Deputy Police Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman applied for a remand of 10 days. There was no lawyer present for the accused during the hearing. At the beginning of the hearing, bail petitions were taken from the accused. However, since Selasta Rahman did not sign, the court did not proceed with his bail cancellation. Later, the court ordered an eight-day remand for the three accused.
It’s worth mentioning that MP Azim has been missing since May 13. Members of Anwarul Azim’s family informed that he went to India for treatment on May 12. On May 13, he informed via WhatsApp that he was going to Delhi. After that, there was no further communication. Kolkata police informed on Wednesday that Azim had been murdered. On the same day, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan stated that MP Azim had been murdered as part of a conspiracy.
Following this incident, on Wednesday, MP Azim’s daughter Mumtazin Ferdous Dorin lodged a complaint at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital seeking the search for her father. The police arrested the three suspects on the same day on suspicion of involvement in the murder.
